The radiating heat from furnace, the smell and the rhythmic sound of burning charcoal. striking of iron to iron, the overwhelming sound of the rough turn into the noble. but Yu-gi is born through all these at the end.
“Yu-Gi” has a very strong character, like tend to be going straight forward and showing everything with no attempt to hide, like a male but also it has delicate and warm heart that embraces everything for a long period of time. In order to help “Yu-Gi” to be more enjoyable and useful for long periods of time to everyone, we thought that “Yu-Gi” should have most simple and aesthetic structure that can approach people in authentic way rather than approach people with only fancy and unique designs.
So, we have tried to look for the simplest lines that can be seen around from our culture, nature, and the life of us, then structured those lines in the most simple, concise and authentic way. Another major challenge we faced was the presence of the lid. Along with functional needs, We wished people can see the value of things inside of bowl without having to open it. Even if it is empty inside, we thought a heavy silence from the lid in placed on the bowl would be persuasive. the shape of bowl has been composed by 11 different featured lines. and we designed the lid of bowl to have same language as bowl it selves. We, then, completed the story of " ham(函, refers to bowl in korean)" by giving a lid the as last sentence of story. we maximized safety users minimizing space which heat can be conducted, but also efficiency usage lids taking account ergonomics finger grip into design. then have reduced weight lighter than other “yu-gi” product market so joyful, better experience.
In addition, we explored dining habit of people to find the demand and the values that modern people truly look for. then, we had a look at the trends of bowl size particularly the one to have rice that is being consumed in the market over long period of time. We, then, were able to confirm that the bowl used in the 1940s, was 680ml of volume but later reduced to half that is 370ml in the 1990s, then reduced again another half that is 190ml in 2013. After all, we have concluded that there is growing number of customers are looking for smaller size of bowls which indicates that the dining habit of people which is eating less for health is becoming a social trend. As per this findings, our design work was carried out in mind of the value of " smaller and little less".
“Beauty”: the story of beauty that flows from the intelligence to the soul through our heart.
Besides function, we knew that the emotional perspective is another important part of design. We, then, spent massive amount of time to understand the emotion of Yu-gi by understanding the process of copper and tin are being alloyed. Now, looking back, it is believed that the time we spent on this was all about our design work that allowed us to have answers for our questions. Also, through various studies and testing conducted on materials, we were able to have design solutions that make inner skin of “Yu-Gi’ to be glossier so foods contained more delicious, and suggested outer skin to be more variety. We have applied 4 different types outer skin to the lid that are smooth, matte, rough, and in lacquer. Through all these efforts, our “Yu-Gi’ became more emotionally rich.
Our old ancestors believed that beauty is not only looking good to eyes but also it is experience and communication that flows from the intelligence to the soul through our heart. We truly believe this value of beauty that our ancestors believed also can be shared with this “Jin-ji-ham”. It can be worthier than other ordinary bowls that are only looking good when we truly share our life with it.
