Ottchil is a black lacquer made by refined resin from poison ivy. The lacquer is applied on the surface of the wood to protect and polish the wood. When the lacquer is completely dry, it has excellent preservation and sterilizing effect to prevent food poisoning. Also, lacquer is a sustainable material as a natural paint.
The Han Gan Ottchil soban is designed to provide a decent meal for one-person-family. After making “Baikgol” (wood before applying lacquer) through the help of “Somokjang” (a craftsman who made wooden crafts), the surface of the Han gan soban was finished with Ottchil. Depending on the use of the Soban, for medicine, for tea and for meals, the size varies. Gan 間 means one room in Hanok and Han means the one, Gan used to be the unit of measuring the size of the house in the past. Han gan Soban reflects the structure and concept of Hanok. One Soban represents one Gan (room) of Hanok, when these Sobans are stacked it reminds the space of Hanok.
